Train transport has a huge potential to reduce emissions in the fresh supply chain. In 2020, CoolRail transported 1,383 containers, avoiding an equal number of trucks on the road. In 2021, we expect to expand the capacity of rail transport further, together with our supply chain partners.

Since October 2020, CoolRail has been running every business day. The rail route has expanded to various destinations in Europe. Starting in Valencia, the trains have London, Rotterdam and Cologne as their final destination. CoolRail transports fruits and vegetables from South to North, and on the way back the containers are filled with empty trays. To ensure reliable transport, Transfesa Logistics makes use of the vast infrastructure of DB Cargo. If required, it can rely on back-up transport by truck to avoid delays. The new model makes rail transport much faster and allows us to optimise our levels of service and quality.

CoolRail is the train connection for the transport of fresh produce. It has been operating between the South and North-West of Europe since May 2019. The purpose of CoolRail is to transport fresh produce in a more sustainable and efficient way. Transport by rail reduces CO2 emissions by 70-90%, compared to transport by truck. After a challenging first year, we strengthened the business case of CoolRail in 2020 by establishing a solid partnership with Transfesa Logistics, a Spanish full-service rail transport provider. As a result, the trains run more frequently, their capacity is fully flexible, and the network has been expanded. This way we offer more flexibility to our customers.
